For this year’s Global Wind Day, Joseph Hilton, Managing Director of SLPE, has given some thought to the recent achievement in British wind power overtaking gas in the first quarter of 2023, as outlined by Drax as part of its Electric Insights series.

The report states that: “Over the first quarter of 2023, wind power generated the largest share of Britain’s electricity for the first time ever. Wind overtook gas, breaking its seven-year run at the top spot. This ends the 100+ year reign of fossil fuels as the country’s largest source of power”.

Joe commented: “As we strive for a sustainable future, this news underscores the progress we are making in our journey towards net-zero by 2050. Expanding our wind generation capacity is crucial not only for reducing greenhouse gas emissions but also for bolstering our energy independence. The recent disruptions in energy supply emphasise the need for sustainable and locally sourced alternatives.

“Wind farms accounted for 32.4% of Britain's electricity in Q1 2023, surpassing the 31.7% generated from gas-fired power plants. This significant shift is a testament to the growing role of renewable energy in our power grid. While challenges remain, this milestone event highlights the potential for a future powered by clean, renewable sources.

“At SLPE, we are proud to be at the forefront of the renewable energy revolution. Our commitment to sustainable practices and innovative solutions aligns perfectly with the goals of a cleaner, greener future. Together, we can create a world where renewable energy powers our lives, protects the environment, and ensures a prosperous future for generations to come”.
